Mothers, 2025

“Mothers” is a series by Jennilee Marigomen and Karyna Schultz, in collaboration with Neighbour.

Mothers is inspired by Jennilee and Karyna’s journeys and the mothers around them. From newborn care to raising teens, the women portrayed meet the camera with a gaze that’s both vulnerable and commanding. The images reveal the visible labor and invisible mental load of motherhood—balancing ambition, caregiving, identity, and resilience. This series honours their strength, beauty, and truth.

Karyna, Fashion Retail Director

At home with Paloma, 4, and Lucia, 7 months

“Going into it, you know your life is going to change, but you can never imagine how. For me, learning to trust my instincts and my kids instincts has given me an unexpected confidence in my ability to be their mom.”

Charlie, Textile Artist

At home with Sicaya, 10

“I feel like when the kid was a baby, It was easier for me to remember that I was new to this, I was learning how to parent through her but now in my 10th year, it’s really important for me to remember that. I’m forever learning how to be her parent and I’m gonna fail at it, but I just have to apologize and try again.”

Shiloh, Architect and Designer

At home with Uma, 16

“The secret beauty of motherhood is that you can never really be ready for it, it requires you to come as you are.”

Anya, Jewelry Designer

37 weeks pregnant, at home

“For me, the secret beauty of becoming a mother has been growth. Nine months of subtle, incremental change has led to what now feels like a holistically new me - emotionally, mentally, and physically.”

Sam, Gardener

In her work truck, with Theo

“Motherhood has awakened a deeper awareness that we were all children once. With Theo, this perspective is guided by love for his unique journey. In everyday moments and interactions, this opens the door to a quiet sense of healing and release when I'm able to remember this.”

Sunja, Spa Owner

At home with Greta, 13, and Moss, 16

“Having two teens is proving to be much more relaxing and easier then I expected. Of course there are challenges with their mood swings and the fact they know everything, but in general I find this stage the best. I like that we all can share the same sense of humour and we can talk about world events and enjoy our independence. I guess I didn't realize till now, their independence also gave us more independence. It is the best of both worlds, having kids but also getting my life back.”

Jessye, Expressive Art Therapist

Joanna, Academic and Flower Gardener

At Jessye’s home with Emmy, 5, and Iris, 2

“We’re always holding multiple truths at once, but this has become a lot louder for me since becoming a mother. Right now, I’m finding beauty and growth when I can be as present as possible with my kids. Playing mermaids together at the pool is important work!” - Jessye

“As a mother of a daughter with children of her own, who parents her children with patience, humour and kindness, I am in the enviable position of simply offering unconditional love and support. Being a sounding board, a cheerleader and, I hope, a steady, non-judgmental presence. I am so grateful for this time in my life where the generations connect.” - Joanna, Mother of Jessye
