“Gated View, 2” (2022), made at the summit of Mount Seymour, presents a landscape that feels open yet slightly out of reach. The thin blue mesh interrupts the view just enough to suggest a subtle boundary

.

The work reflects the experience of growing up near certain forms of access and ease without fully inhabiting them — a perspective shaped by being the child of an immigrant and a single mother. Vancouver’s landscapes — and the activities and opportunities connected to them — can feel inviting while still carrying quiet limits. The grid in the image reflects that tension, hinting at the structures that influence access to place, opportunity, and ease.

The photograph also gestures toward life in high-cost urban environments, where people navigate both visible and invisible limits while still seeking moments of clarity and perspective. Lives are built in these landscapes through steady effort and small revelations—glimpses of what lies beyond.

Here, the soft sunset behind the fence suggests that even within constraint, beauty endures, offering glimpses beyond whatever boundaries frame the scene.
